DR. RICCIARDI: The Porcelain Veneers is probably one of the most cosmetic procedures done in dentistry today. It is definitely one of the most life changing, life altering procedures. Before somebody has veneers sometimes they could feel uncomfortable with their smile, not smile too much. We see them in photographs and not be smiling or covering up their smile. After you do veneers on a person it is life changing. The next thing you know they are smiling all the time and in photographs they are always smiling they don't hide their smile and they are just more outgoing and happy. It is a conservative tooth preparation, usually only about a half a millimeter. It is still remaining in the enamel which is the outer layer of your tooth. And it is porcelain facing that goes over the front of the tooth. It is used to correct alignment problems, some teeth are slightly rotated or some teeth that are partially restored have some older composite fillings that are staining and non-aesthetic. They are also used when a tooth is little bit darker than another tooth and you want to get the right color and right shading. You really see it in the big cosmetic makeovers when you do eight of them really changes the smile of the person and it can really be a life changing procedure for some people. Some people that have forgotten how to smile and then you change their smile and put some veneers on and it changes their life.
