Common Dental Treatments for Seniors By Eugene D. Stanislaus on January 31, 2012

Although a lifetime commitment to good oral hygiene and a healthy diet can help in maintaining the health of our teeth, professional dental care can greatly extend and enhance the life of our smiles. It's never too late to improve the health, comfort, function, and appearance of your teeth and mouth. At our Brooklyn cosmetic dentistry center, we are proud to offer a wide variety of cosmetic and restorative dental treatments for seniors; these treatments can help keep your smile healthy for years to come.

Dental Implants

High-quality dental implants are the strongest and most advanced method for replacing a missing tooth. A dental implant improves a patient's bite, will not hinder speech, and requires the same care as a regular tooth. During the procedure, a small titanium rod is surgically inserted into the bone, allowing a natural looking temporary tooth to be mounted in place. The titanium rod fuses to the jawbone over three to six months, and then a more permanent tooth is placed on the implant, providing long-lasting results. At Brooklyn Heights Dental, we are often able to provide our Brooklyn dental implant patients with both the implant and a replacement tooth on the same day, ensuring a beautiful smile with no waiting periods.

Dentures

Patients missing some or most of their teeth will be pleased with the variety of denture options provided by Dr. Eugene D. Stanislaus and our team. We feature full and partial dentures, implant-supported dentures and overdentures.

  • Full Dentures - When many or most of a patient's teeth are missing, full dentures are a commonly recommended treatment. Full dentures are made of porcelain or plastic teeth, and are custom-fit to each patient's mouth. Dentures help keep a patient's jaw shaped and working properly, and can be removed at night and for cleanings.
  • Partial Dentures - These dentures attach to natural teeth, often using metal clasps, and are ideal for patients who are missing a few teeth.
  • Implant-supported Dentures - For patients missing most of their bottom teeth, implant-supported dentures are a more permanent replacement option that utilizes similar technology to our single dental implants. Dental implants are surgically placed in the lower jaw, and a full lower denture is attached. The result is natural in appearance and allows for easy chewing.

Dental Bridges

Patients with a few missing teeth should consider a dental bridge. Dental bridges are a long-lasting tooth replacement option that consists of a porcelain tooth that is attached to a patient's surrounding natural teeth by two porcelain crowns. The treatment contains no unattractive silver, and protects a patient's smile by preventing teeth from drifting into neighboring gaps over time.

ZOOM!® Tooth Whitening

Over time, teeth can permanently darken and stain. ZOOM!® Tooth Whitening is a safe and effective treatment for patients who want to brighten up their smile. During a ZOOM!® treatment, a unique hydrogen peroxide gel is applied to the teeth and a laser light is used to speed up and gently enhance the whitening process.

General Dentistry

Good oral hygiene is important for people of all ages, and is our first line of defense against gum disease. Regular professional teeth cleanings, in combination with daily brushing and flossing, are all key to ensuring tooth retention throughout our later years.
