Wisdom Tooth Extraction Brooklyn

A happy young man smiles because his wisdom tooth have been removed.Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to come in, and typically erupt from the gums in your late teens or early twenties. Although some of us can comfortably accommodate these extra teeth, most cannot. Left untreated, wisdom teeth can cause soreness and pain, shifting of surrounding teeth, and more serious problems like infection.

At Brooklyn Heights Dental® we offer wisdom tooth extraction to our patients in Brooklyn and surrounding areas. Drs. Eugene D. Stanislaus and Lisa Reid have years of experience performing extractions and can remove wisdom teeth quickly, while maintaining your best possible comfort. This important procedure preserves oral health and can help our patients avoid painful, costly dental problems in the future.

Why Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom teeth can be difficult to reach and thoroughly clean with normal brushing and flossing. Sometimes there is not enough room in the jaw to allow wisdom teeth to fully erupt from the gum line. As a result, wisdom teeth can grow in crooked, and crowd and shift surrounding teeth.

Failure to extract wisdom teeth can result in an increased risk of:

  • Cavities
  • Infection
  • Gum disease
  • Cysts or sores
  • Damage to adjacent teeth
  • Shifting of surrounding teeth

These problems can lead to serious oral and general health problems like headaches, tooth loss, and more. A thorough examination at our office can determine whether you or your child's wisdom teeth need to be extracted.

Treating Complex Cases

Wisdom tooth removal requires a high level of expertise. Our team at Brooklyn Heights Dental® is adept at extracting wisdom teeth, even especially challenging and complex cases that other dentists might refer out to an oral surgeon.

Wisdom teeth become impacted when they are unable to fully enter the mouth because of their alignment or a lack of space. Impacted wisdom teeth are most likely to cause problems because they exert an enormous amount of pressure on surrounding teeth and the jawbone. We are skilled in the extraction of both erupted and impacted wisdom teeth at our practice.

The Procedure: What to Expect

Patients undergoing wisdom tooth extraction may choose to undergo either IV sedation or nitrous oxide sedation. Sedation not only minimizes pain and anxiety, but allows our doctors to operate much more efficiently. Our doctors can help determine which type of sedation is right for you during a consultation. You will also receive local anesthesia to inhibit pain at the site of extraction.

During the extraction procedure, our doctors make small incisions in the gums to create an opening where each tooth will be removed. A small portion of bone may need to be removed in some cases. Each treated wisdom tooth is then pulled from the jaw and the remaining wound is thoroughly cleaned. If needed, dissolvable stitches will be used to close the wound.

In the week following your procedure, a check-up appointment is recommended so we can check that the surgical site is healing properly. You will be given a prescription for a pain medication to help relieve soreness while your gums heal. You will also receive detailed instructions for eating and drinking. These steps minimize the risk of complications developing during the healing period.
