How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

During professional teeth whitening treatment, a bleaching agent is applied to the teeth. This whitening product contains hydrogen peroxide, the active ingredient in the whitening process. The hydrogen peroxide penetrates into the tooth enamel and whitens the topmost layers of the teeth.

Thanks to teeth whitening, you don't have to live with a dingy or yellow smile.
You can have whiter teeth that you want to show off to others.

In-Office Teeth Whitening vs. At-Home Products

/

There are many whitening toothpastes, strips, tray systems, and mouthwashes that claim to whiten your teeth. These over-the-counter whitening products can be somewhat effective, but they do not yield the same results as professional in-office treatment. A single whitening session in-office with our Brooklyn dentists can brighten your smile much faster than weeks of using a whitening toothpaste or an at-home bleaching kit.

I will highly recommend Brooklyn Heights Dental. Their services are splendid in all matters. Clear information, follow-up in case of a health insurance concern, and, most importantly, they accommodated my needs. I have PTSD, and sometimes noises, textures, and the anesthesia could make me feel unwell. After speaking with the hygienist and Dr. Reid, they were extra careful, and constantly making sure that I felt heard, safe, and comfortable in the chair. THANK YOU!

First visit to the dentists prior to the pandemic. This was a great experience. There was bit of a mixup as my appointment didn't show up on their calendar. Rather then send me home to reschedule another appointment, they were able slot me in. Exceptional customer service.

Philips Zoom! Teeth Whitening A Trusted Name in Professional Whitening

Before and after teeth whitening

Philips Zoom! teeth whitening is fast, safe, and effective.

Zoom! teeth whitening is one of the most well-known cosmetic dentistry brands on the market. Countless patients have experienced the benefits of Zoom!, which has helped them achieve the smile they've always wanted.

Safely Whiten Your Teeth

Unlike over-the-counter kits, in-office Zoom! whitening is carefully monitored to ensure your safety and that the hydrogen peroxide gel is evenly applied. In just a single 45-minute treatment, your smile can be brightened by up to eight shades.

A Proven Track Record

Our dentists have used Zoom! whitening at our Brooklyn practice for many years. It's always been a reliable and simple system, delivering consistent results that leave patients satisfied. Even patients with sensitive teeth can experience the benefits of this in-office treatment.

Whitening vs. Bonding

Dental bonding uses a tooth-colored resin that is painted directly onto a tooth. The bonding material can mask stains as well as chips and cracks. Whitening treatment and bonding yield excellent results, and we can discuss which option is right for you during your visit.

Whitening vs. Veneers

Porcelain veneers are custom shells that are cemented to the front of a tooth. A veneer can mask stains, fractures, and other imperfections. Veneers are a good option when someone has intrinsic stains that do not respond to whitening treatment and the results look even more lifelike than bonding.

The Teeth Whitening Procedure A Step-by-Step Guide

A single in-office whitening session can brighten your smile much faster than weeks of using a whitening toothpaste or an at-home bleaching kit.

In-office whitening sessions take less than an hour to complete. Let's walk you through the process.

A single in-office whitening session can brighten your smile much faster than weeks of using a whitening toothpaste or an at-home bleaching kit.

Cleaning Your Teeth

Before the teeth whitening session begins, your teeth are cleaned to ensure optimal results.

Safety First

Patients are given special safety glasses to protect their eyes during the teeth whitening session.

Applying the Gel

The dentist will apply the hydrogen peroxide gel evenly on the patient's teeth. We're careful to avoid getting the gel on the gums.

Blue Light Activation

Your teeth are exposed to a blue light. Oxygen molecules within the gel will then set off a chemical reaction, causing the bonds between stained molecules on the teeth to break down.

Repeating the Process

The process is repeated two more times. Each coat of gel typically remains on your teeth for about 15 minutes.

Scheduling a Follow-Up Visit

After the Zoom! session is completed, we can schedule a follow-up visit to check on your results. For seriously stained smiles, multiple Zoom! sessions can be scheduled a few weeks apart to fully whiten your smile.

Tooth Sensitivity After Whitening Treatment

/

Sensitive teeth are a common side effect of whitening treatment. It's caused by the hydrogen peroxide and other active ingredients in the whitening gel. As they penetrate the enamel, these ingredients reach the porous dentin layer of the tooth, triggering tooth sensitivity in some patients. Thankfully, this is only temporary. We carefully monitor the process to reduce sensitivity, and offer tips for at-home care so you can minimize discomfort after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening

Does teeth whitening hurt?

No. Your dentist will apply the whitening product to your teeth and is careful to prevent the gel from touching your gums. The concentration of the bleaching agent will also be customized to avoid triggering any tooth sensitivity.

Does dental insurance cover professional teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is considered a cosmetic dentistry treatment, so dental insurance does not cover it. However, we have flexible financing available to help make the beautiful smile you want affordable.

How can I keep my teeth whitened after treatment?

Proper dental hygiene is key to keeping your teeth healthy and beautiful. To keep your smile as white as possible for longer, minimize drinks and foods that can stain your teeth, like coffee and red wine. You can also undergo periodic touch-up treatments to keep your smile looking bright and radiant.

I've had professional teeth whitening before, but it didn't work. Can you still help?

Yes. Your dentist will evaluate your teeth to determine the type of discoloration or staining you have. If they feel your dental stains will not respond to teeth whitening treatment, dental bonding or veneers may be a better option to help you achieve your goals.

I have some oral health issues. Can I still undergo teeth whitening?

It is important to first address oral health issues before any cosmetic treatment. Once your oral health concerns have been addressed, your dentist can determine if you are a candidate for teeth whitening.
