What is Invisalign?
A series of Invisalign aligners are customized just for you, designed to gently move your teeth in a sequence predetermined by your dentist. The virtually invisible aligners look very similar to teeth whitening trays. They are made of a an advanced, safe plastic material developed for Invisalign.
How do aligners straighten teeth?
You will be given a new aligner approximately every two weeks. Each new aligner is slightly different in shape and will gently reposition your teeth until they are all eventually aligned. The tooth realignment process is mapped out in detail in advance by your dentist.
How long will the treatment take?
The length of treatment depends on the severity of your case, and your age. Patients with mild cases of tooth misalignment can expect a shorter treatment course than patients with more severe tooth misalignment issues. On average, it takes about 12 months for adults to align their teeth. Teen patient treatment times have a greater degree of variance.
How often should I wear the aligners?
For the most effective treatment, it is recommended that aligners are worn 20 to 22 hours per day. Ideally, they should only be removed for eating and daily hygiene routines.
How do I maintain and clean the aligners?
It is advised that patient use the Invisalign Cleaning system to maintain their aligners. Alternatively, your aligners can be cleaned by brushing them and rinsing them with lukewarm water.
Invisalign allows you to discretely align your teeth since the aligners are nearly invisible.
Will I require a retainer following treatment?
Most dentists recommend that patients use a retainer following any orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign treatment. This appliance prevents the teeth from gradually shifting back into misaligned positions. You will need to confirm with your dentist as to whether or not retainers are needed in your case, and if so, if they are recommended for your upper or lower teeth, or both.
What are the primary benefits of Invisalign?
Invisalign allows you to discretely align your teeth since the aligners are nearly invisible. The custom aligners are removable, allowing you to eat and drink what you wish, unlike traditional orthodontics. Since there are no metal brackets or wires, there is little risk of irritation in the mouth. You will also spend less time in the dentist’s chair since your office visits will not involve adjusting brackets and wires. Finally, you will be able to view your virtual results and treatment plan in advance, so you can visualize your straightened teeth post-treatment.
