DR. REID: Crowns are restorations for teeth that have large fillings, that are fractured, that have severe decay. And really the process takes place over about two visits. At the first visit we are going to pick a shade, follow the tooth down, make an impression, give you a temporary crown to go home with and send other information to the lab. The lab then goes ahead to make that final restoration for you, you come back and we cement the crown in place. The really great thing about dentistry is that we have seen so many advancements within the last few years especially in terms of materials that we use for these crowns. So we are able to finally now, make restorations that really mimic the natural teeth in terms of color and shape and size and so forth.
