Root Canal Therapy at Brooklyn Heights Dental, Serving Fort Greene, DUMBO, and New York City
When the pulp inside your tooth becomes decayed, it causes pain and swelling. If left untreated, the tooth will have to be removed, and a dental implant or partial denture is often needed to replace it. Root canal therapy is an alternative to expensive treatments to save the tooth. Dr. Eugene Stanislaus focuses on endodontics at Brooklyn Heights Dental and has performed root canal therapy for patients in the Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Crown Heights, Manhattan, and Bedford Stuyvesant areas for over two decades. What Is a Root Canal?
When people mention the term “root canal,” they are most often referring to the dental procedure in which the decayed pulp of the tooth is removed. While this is true, the root canal is also the opening in the middle of the tooth where the pulp and nerve are located and where the procedure gets its name. Endodontics deals with the pulp and root of the tooth. During the root canal procedure at Brooklyn Heights Dental, the damaged pulp of the tooth is removed to relieve pain and prevent further infection.Root Canal Procedure
The root canal procedure typically requires one to three visits, depending on the amount of damage to the pulp of the tooth. An x-ray will reveal to Dr. Stanislaus the extent of decay and whether an infection is present in the tooth. Once Dr. Stanislaus has assessed the damage and administered anesthesia, he will use a drill with special root canal files to clean out the tooth and remove the pulp. When the pulp has been completely removed, Dr. Stanislaus will seal it with a temporary filling. Dr. Stanislaus may place a crown on the tooth to further reinforce its structure. While the tissue surrounding the tooth may feel sensitive after the root canal treatment, pain is commonly treated with an over-the-counter pain reliever and will subside after a couple of days.
